I believe in the power of education to improve the lives of individuals and change the world for the better.
I’m discouraged about all the negative publicity coming at educators and schools from social media. So, I’ve become a columnist writing about K-12 public education for Insight Kansas, a group of active and retired professors in Kansas who publish weekly op eds on state politics.
The focus of my writing is on:
Academic achievement,
Citizenship, and
Respect for diversity
I’m not a Republican or Democrat, liberal or conservative--just a person who supports Kansas teachers and students. I am registered to vote as an Independent.
I write from the perspective of a teacher, professor and dean. I am the mother of three sons, and I have six grandchildren. All are attending or have graduated from public schools, although two grandchildren went to a private, religious elementary school.
Currently, I serve on the Wichita Public Library Foundation Board where children’s literacy is a goal. I also serve on the education committee of Exploration Place, a science museum for Kansas families where I am continually impressed by the all-out energy and commitment of the teachers on the committee.
Even though I live in Wichita, I speak with people across the state as I research my columns.
I want to share my opinion columns, blog with a larger audience and get readers’ feedback.
